“It’s the court of public opinion”: Sarah Ferguson condemns Phillip Schofield backlash

Sarah Ferguson has spoken out against the wave of judgement directed at former This Morning presenter Phillip Schofield and the relationship scandal that swept the world.

The 63-year-old Duchess of York was chatting to businesswoman Sarah Jane Thomson on her podcast, Tea Talks, when conversation turned to Schofield, and his controversial affair with a man - and co-worker - 30 years younger than him.

When news of the affair broke, Schofield stepped down from his 20 year position as the face of This Morning. He later confessed to the Daily Mail that he had lied about the relationship, and informed The Sun that he was “not a groomer”, despite public opinion.

Criticism for the disgraced host flooded social media in the wake of the whole ordeal, with the story and its related rumours splashed across publications worldwide, and it was the backlash that Ferguson wanted to address, namely the idea of ‘cancel culture’ at the centre of it all.

Thomson prompted the discussion by comparing social media’s take to a “huge game of Chinese whispers”, to which Ferguson responded that “it’s like the court of public opinion.”

“And then [that can lead to] massive bullying to the point of extermination of a soul,” she added. “I don’t believe that anybody has that right to judge and exterminate a person’s own beliefs.”

From there, Ferguson encouraged listeners not to leap to assumptions, as “we all have failings”. She asked that everyone instead take a moment “or make a cup of tea before you judge another human being without knowing all the facts”.

“We don’t know the facts,” she pointed out. “We certainly don’t know what people get up to.”

Thomson had her own thoughts to share on the matter, noting that “the problem is, when you’re in the public eye, any failing you make is there to be talked about, and the rest of us don’t have that.

“We don't have that deep examining of where we've gone wrong, and then it's reflected over and over and over.”

And while the two had made their point, Ferguson took a moment to discuss a - in her opinion “spot on” - article by Jeremy Clarkson for the Sunday Times, in which he wrote about the public’s race to condemn Schofield.

“I’ve never seen a witch-hunt like it,” he said, “and what baffles me most of all is that, as things stand, no crime has been committed. I don’t know him at all well and have no skin in the game, but it seems to me he is only guilty of being what he said he was: gay.”

In the article, Clarkson went on to note that the age gap between Schofield and his partner in the affair was receiving a different degree of attention to heterosexual stars in similar relationship situations - from the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, who frequently dates women significantly younger than himself, and Al Pacino’s 54-year age gap with his pregnant partner.

“Phil is no longer the genial host of some morning-time televisual cappuccino froth,” Clarkson surmised. “According to the people's court of social media, he's like his brother, a nonce.”

Images: Getty

"I will die sorry": Phillip Schofield breaks his silence on his career-ending affair

Former This Morning host Phillip Schofield has broken his silence over his affair with a colleague 30 years his junior in an interview with The Sun.

And while the disgraced British television star shared that he had been left feeling “utterly broken and ashamed” over the whole ordeal, he stressed that any rumours of grooming were not true.

“I did not,” he told the publication, after a week of the social media rumour mill running riot. “I did not [groom him].”

“I know the photos of us circulating on Twitter look shocking, but I’m not a groomer,” Phillip insisted.

He noted that “there are accusations of all sorts of things”, but claimed that had never been an abuse of power, as “we’d become mates … but of course I understand that there will be a massive judgement, but bearing in mind, I have never exercised that anywhere else.”

According to Phillip, the two remain friends. And although the ex-show runner had been 30 years younger than him at the time of their affair, he added that the relationship had only begun after the man was 20 years old, when “something just happened between us that changed everything.”

“I assume somebody, somewhere, assumed something was going on, correctly” he shared, “and didn't say anything.

“At the time I did not think about it possibly ruining my career. I really probably only thought about it when I saw the rumour mill, and saw it growing.

“Then I saw the link with the drama school photo [from] all those years before, and thought, ‘this looks shocking’."

However, as Phillip said, he hadn’t lied in order to protect his own career, but instead because the other man in the affair hadn’t wanted “his name in public. He wanted his own life.”

Phillip explained that “the lies grew bigger and bigger and bigger”, and that it was starting to have a deep effect on both of them.

“It got to the stage where it was out of control,” he said, “and for whatever cost, it had to stop.

“I have massive guilt, and regret. I’ve made a mistake, I’ve had an affair at work.”

“I think my greatest apology must go to him,” Phillip revealed. “It has brought the greatest misery into his totally innocent life, his totally innocent family, his totally innocent friends.

“It has brought the greatest grief to them.”

He added that the pair hadn’t spoken since the story broke - and that he also no longer speaks to his former friend and co-host Holly Willoughby - but that when things began to spiral out of control, he’d “paid for his lawyers to independently work on his behalf.

“I am deeply sorry and I apologise to him because I should have known better. I should have acted the way I have always acted. I should not have done it.

“I’m sorry. And I will forever be sorry. I will die sorry. I am so deeply mortified.”

Images: Getty

What it’s like to cruise around the world

Harry Phillips has checked off all the locations he dreamed to visit as a little boy growing up in Sydney – and he’s done it all by cruising.

Harry has enjoyed a 75-night cruise around the Pacific and a 104-day cruise around the world and recommends cruising as a fun and convenient way to travel the globe.

“I was just amazed the sights I saw on my cruise around the world. I saw places I had only read about, United States, Europe, Arabian Gulf, Asia, just so many great ports,” he tells Over60.

Harry first got a taste for travelling on the sea when he embarked on a cruise around the Pacific on the Sun Princess.

“The most memorable day was when we organised a mock wedding with the crew help. It had a cake and we held the wedding on the back deck. We had a friend dress as a minister, I was the MC and there were groomsmen and bridesmaids. It was a beautiful day, about 80 people turned up and thought it was for real,” he recalls.

Two years later, his passion for exploring the world had not abated so Harry embarked on his second cruise on the Dawn Princess where he travelled around the globe.

“I'm a widower and so is my lady friend and we both like warm weather. Those two years we were away from the cold weather,” he says.

Some of his friends joined the two as they sailed from England to Sydney but “missed some great ports in America.”

Breaking expectations

Not everyone thought Harry’s adventure was a good idea. But Harry prove them wrong. He believes cruising reduces the majority of stresses that comes with travelling.

“Friends said I was mad to be on a ship that long but most of the time you’re ashore all day sightseeing and only come back aboard to eat and sleep. Then you wake up in a different port. I tell them it's like traveling the world with a great hotel following you,” he says.

“It’s the best way to see the world. You get on in Sydney unpack and have a drink while you sail away to see the world. You don't have to worry where to eat or stay, no worries about the weight of your bags. You see some of the best places in the world and I can tell you sailing into Sydney after 104 nights away is the most beautiful sight in the world.”

For Harry, cruising the world is the prefect holiday. He can’t think of any negative aspects to his experience. The sheer excitement of looking forward to what he would see in the next port they stopped at made his day, every day.

Many highlights

Harry has taken away many highlights from his cruises – from visiting Normandy, to being stunned by the French country side and watching the changing of the guards in a palace in Monte Carlo.

“One of our most memorable nights on board was on the formal night when we were invited to a private party by the Head Maitre D, his name was Rui. it was a birthday dinner for the first officer and there were two officers, another couple and us. It was a feast with jumbo prawns, lobster tails and we had flaming Bombe Alaska dessert,” he recalls.

“It was a fabulous night, the wine flowed and we would only take a sip out of our glasses and the waiters would top it up. For the life of me I never realised why we were invited but we seemed to get along with Rui. He was very suave Italian, always immaculately dressed, not a hair out of place and to me he looked like he just stepped out of The Sopranos.”

Images: Getty

Marvel actress and husband sentenced to 8 and 14 years jail

Content warning: This article includes descriptions of child sexual abuse.

Actress Zara Phythian, who appeared in Marvel’s 2016 film Doctor Strange, has received an eight-year prison sentence for child sexual abuse offences.

The 38-year-old was found guilty by a jury last week of historical sexual abuse of a girl, aged between 13 and 15, and sentenced in the UK on Monday.

Her 59-year-old husband, Victor Marke, was also found guilty of jointly abusing the same girl, as well as indecently assaulting a second, and sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Both Phythian and Marke will be on the sex offender’s register for life and will be referred to the disclosure and barring service to prevent them from working with children ever again.

Judge Mark Watson, who presided over the proceedings and handed down the sentences, said he believed Marke and Phythian’s abuse of the victim was pre-planned.

“I regard you as the driving force behind the abuse,” Judge Watson told Marke.

“Most people have held, and continue to hold you in high esteem. That’s due to the positive impact of your work [as martial arts instructors].

“Whilst that may help in mitigation, that is also why you were able to groom and corrupt the victims in this case and why you got away abusing them for so long.”

Marke reportedly cried during the sentencing and paced the court in a tracksuit, while Phythian reportedly smiled and waved to someone in the public gallery, though her face was said to be pale and tear-streaked, per The Mirror.

Judge Watson also said Phythian’s “deviance” was influenced by the hold Marke had on her from an early age - with the couple marrying when she was in her 20s after Marke had been her martial arts instructor from when she was a young teen.

During the trial, the couple denied the accusations they were jointly convicted of, and the survivor, who they abused before Phythian found acting fame, gave testimony from behind a curtain in the witness stand.

She said what happened to her, which the couple repeatedly told her not to tell anyone about, was her “deepest, darkest secret”.

“I think they saw a vulnerability in me and preyed on that,” she said in a police interview.

The second survivor of Marke’s assaults, said that he touched her leg after she accidentally touched his leg, before kissing her on the lips and neck and causing her feelings of confusion, according to her police interview.

At other times, Marke also kissed her, before having sex with her when she was 16.

Though the age of consent in the UK is 16, under section 15.3 of the Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 2000 a person over the age of 18 who is in a “position of trust” to someone under 18 - such as being a martial arts instructor - would be committing an offence by having sex with them.

Prior to sentencing, prosecutor Ahmed Hossain QC read out victim statements, where the survivor abused by Phythian and Marke said they “corrupted my development” and “robbed me of my innocence”.

“You showed you liked a very advanced naughty side that satisfied your urges,” she said in the statement via Hossain.

She also spoke of feeling intimidated and scared by the couple and stated that she didn’t want to keep being “[their] puppet”.

“I have become an adult now. All the pain, anger and disgust and shame I felt is now on you. Both of you.”

Image: Getty Images

Doctor Strange star and husband found guilty of child abuse

Warning: This article contains graphic content that some readers may find distressing.

Zara Phythian, star of Marvel's latest movie Doctor Strange, has been arrested alongside her husband Victor Marke , with the pair now facing jail.

The couple have been found guilty of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl multiple times between 2005 and 2008.

According to The Sun, Phythian plied the teen with rum before making her perform a sex act on her husband, which occurred once or twice a month until the teen was finally able to free herself.

Jurors heard that the couple were working as martial arts experts at the time, and Marke had sex with the victim at least 20 times on different occasions.

Marke, 59, branded the allegations “paedophile sh*t” when quizzed by officers after his arrest, Nottingham Crown Court was told.

He said he was “really angry” to be accused, and told officers, “If you’re trying to say I’m a paedophile, I’m not.”

Marke claimed he had consensual sex with the teen when she was 18 – something his wife only discovered during her police interview.

Phythian, 38, told detectives she’d never had any form of sexual contact with the girl, calling it “bulls**t”.

Upon discovering her husband had revealed he’d had sex with her accuser, she said she felt “confused”, adding that she’d “liked to have known about it”.

The victim said she “would never have come forward” and planned to “die with my shame”, but as she recently became a mother, she said she felt she had “no option to speak my truth”.

Despite denying all allegations of abuse, the couple were found unanimously guilty by the jury.

Judge Mark Watson will decide later when the pair will be sentenced.

Prince Harry comes together with royal family in tribute to Prince Phillip

Prince Harry will soon join with members of the British Royal Family, including brother Prince William, as a special tribute is paid to his late grandfather, Prince Phillip.

The Duke of Edinburgh will forever be remembered by all of his children and grandchildren in a documentary that will air later this month. The BBC recently announced the release of Prince Phillip: The Royal Family Remembers, revealing it was something that began as a tribute for the Duke’s 100th
birthday, but was reworked following his death in April.

“More than a dozen members of the Royal Family offer their personal thoughts and reflections as they pay historic tribute to the extraordinary life of His Royal Highness Prince Phillip Duke of Edinburgh” a press release stated.

All children of the Queen and Duke, along with their adult grandchildren and other members of the Royal Family, have agreed to take part in this unique portrait of the longest-serving consort in royal history.

This landmark documentary features interviews filmed both before and after the Duke’s death in April. Producers were given special access to the Queen’s private home movie collection, which is sure to unearth some unique footage.

Between the footage and the interview, it’s said the documentary will be “an unrivalled portrait of a man with a unique place in royal history – by those who knew him best”.

Image: Getty

Prince Harry has made a number of TV appearances since his exit from life as a senior royal in March 2020, but none of those have been alongside other members of the Royal Family. His two Oprah appearances and his appearance in the mental health docu-series The Me You Can’t See – both covered his trials and tribulations with the royals and his perhaps worst memories in recent times.

This TV appearance will more than likely have a more positive angle for the Duke of Sussex to reflect on. Prince Harry flew from the US to the UK to attend his grandfather’s funeral, marking this occasion as the first time he’d seen his family since the claims of racism within The Firm, among a number of other revelations.

This new documentary isn’t the first time the family are paying tribute to their patriarch. Days after passing, the Queen and Prince Phillip’s four children – Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward – remembered their farther in a special that aired on the BBC.

Prince Phillip: The Royal Family Remembers airs in the UK on September 22 at 9 pm (6 am September 23rd AEST).

Queen speaks at length for first time since passing of Prince Phillip

Queen Elizabeth has spoken at length for the first time since her husband Prince Philip died.

Speaking to the Royal Life Saving Society via video call, the Queen looked calm and composed as she looked back fondly at the time when she was awarded the Life Saving Award as a young girl.

Queen Elizabeth was just 14 when she earned her junior respiration award in February 1941.

She was the first young person in the Commonwealth to achieve the award.

“I didn’t realise I was the first one - I just did it, and had to work very hard for it,” the Queen said in the video call.

“It was a great achievement and I was very proud to wear the badge on the front of my swimming suit.

“It was very grand, I thought.”

When the Queen said it had happened “a long time ago,” deputy Commonwealth president of the society, Clive Holland, said: “Your Majesty, when you say it was a long time ago, it was in fact 80 years ago.”

“That’s terrible!”, Queen Elizabeth, 95, responded.

The Royal Life Saving Society works across 30 different Commonwealth countries, aiming to eliminate preventable death by drowning, promoting water safety and lifeguarding education.

Queen Elizabeth “virtually” presented Stephen Beerman with the King Edward VII Cup, awarded every two years in recognition of outstanding contributions to drowning prevention.

The Queen has been the patron of the Royal Life Saving Society since 1952.

Prince Phillip’s official cause of death revealed

The Duke of Edinburgh's cause of death was officially recorded as "old age" according to medical documents.

Prince Philip passed at Windsor Castle on April 9, aged 99.

When he died, Buckingham Palace declined to release any further information except to say he "passed away peacefully".

But now, it has been revealed Prince Philip's cause of death was "old age".

According to The Telegraph UK, which obtained the document, the term "old age" is an accepted description if the patient is aged over 80 and if the doctor has personally cared for them for many years witnessing their decline.

Prince Philip's death was certified by Sir Huw Thomas, the head of the royal medical household.

The cause of death suggests there were no other factors to contribute to his passing.

In February Prince Philip was admitted to hospital for 28 days, where he had a procedure on his heart and was treated for an infection.

The certificate also references Prince Philip's Greek heritage and his family surname which he famously wanted to give his children.

The document lists his name as "His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh formerly known as Prince Philippos of Greece and Denmark formerly known as Philip Mountbatten".

His first listed occupation is Naval Officer, while his second is "husband of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, The Sovereign".

Prince Philip's death was registered with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead by his private secretary, Brigadier Archie Miller-Bakewell, on April 13.

Obviously Scotland, absolutely, actually I was genuinely angry after the England game.

"And then Sunday got even better because a little baby boy arrived at my house."

A spokesperson for the couple also confirmed the news, saying, "Zara and Mike Tindall are happy to announce the birth of their third child, Lucas Philip Tindall."

The name is a nod to Mike's father Philip and Zara's grandfather, Prince Philip. This is the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh's tenth great-grandchild.

Buckingham Palace released a statement on behalf of the Queen and the Duke, saying they are "delighted" by the news.

They "look forward to meeting their 10th great-grandchild when circumstances allow", a spokesman added.

Mike told his podcast co-hosts a friend helped them welcome the 8lbs 4oz (3.74kg) tot at their home on the royal Gatcombe estate in Gloucestershire.

"Zara's friend Dolly is, she's actually more important than I am at making sure she's been at every three of my children's births — she was there and recognised that we wouldn't have got to the hospital in time, so it was run into the gym, get a mat, get into the bathroom, get the mat on the floor, get the towels down, brace brace brace!" he said

"Fortunately the midwife that was going to meet us at the hospital wasn't that far away so she drove up, got there just as we'd assumed the position, and then the second midwife arrived just after the head had arrived!"

This is the third child for the couple, who are already parents to Mia, born 2014, and Lena, born 2018.

Queen's grandson spotted in bizarre Chinese milk ad

The Queen’s eldest grandson, Peter Phillips has been spotted starring in a television advertisement for a Chinese milk brand.

In result, controversy has sparked on whether there is an issue with The Firm using their royal connections to generate a private income.

41-year-old Mr Phillips is the son of Princess Anne and her ex-husband Captain Mark Phillips, however he is not a working royal and has never had a royal title.

He has become the poster boy over the years to prove royal family members can have private lives, despite belonging to one of the most famous families in the world.

'Royal Peter' for hire in China: As Prince Harry flies to Canada to earn millions, the Queen's eldest grandson Peter Phillips is revealed to be trading on his royal status by advertising milk on TV
https://t.co/9FlNesAaWx pic.twitter.com/ZoYSd6biSB
— Brightly (@Brightl36034096) January 21, 2020

Throughout his adulthood, he has held prominent positions with Jaguar and a Formula One racing team. He is married to Canadian Autumn Kelly, and the couple share two daughters together who don’t have royal titles.

Mr Phillips’ latest public endorsement features him dressed to the nines in a dinner jacket and black bow tie for a 30-second ad for China’s state-owned Bright Dairies.

In the advertisement he can be seen peering out the window of a stately country house in Britain’s Wiltshire. A replica of a horse-drawn royal carriage pulls outside the home and then a butler approaches Phillips.

In the ad he is described as “British Royal Family member Peter Phillips.”

“Bright Dairies has got a fantastic reputation all over China and outside of China as well, for producing high quality dairy products,” Mr Phillips says in a separate, behind-the-scenes video.

“As children, we used to spend a lot of time down at the dairy. There was a herd of Jersey cattle at Windsor and we were brought up on it.

“And it was always much fuller of flavour, much creamier, than other milks that we had growing up. That has something to do with the way the cows are bred.”

Peter and Zara have been free to pursue their own careers as non-working members of the royal family. Zara, 38, is a champion equestrian who also earns a comfortable living as an ambassador for luxury brands, including Rolex and Land Rover, while Peter is the managing director of a sports and entertainment agency.

The ad has been released in the midst of a huge debate surrounding both the Duke and Duchess of Sussex who recently announced their intention to step down from their position as senior royal to seek a more “private life” and generate a private income.

Buckingham Palace announced that the couple would no longer formally represent the Queen nor be able to use their HRH titles.

However they will remain the Duke and Duchess of Sussex as it was titles given to them as a wedding present by the Queen.

They have also already applied to trademark their Sussex Royal brand.

The couple already have the username Sussex Royal on their website and Instagram account, which has 11 million followers.

The trademark will allow Prince Harry and Meghan to release their own personal line of branded products, including books, calendars and clothing, in the future.

The couple are rumoured to also be moving into content creation and could possibly sign deals with the likes of Netflix or do further work with Disney.

Thomas Woodcock, a senior adviser to the Queen, told The Times on Tuesday that he didn’t believe the name Sussex Royal was right to keep.

“I don’t think it’s satisfactory. One cannot be two things at once. You either are [royal] or you’re not,” he said.

Royals must be meticulous in making sure they’re not seen exploiting their royal connections or tarnishing the family’s tightly guarded brand.

Mr Woodcock, who is the Garter King of Arms, aids the Queen in being a principal adviser on ceremonial matters and heraldry.

He is also part of ensuring that commercial concerns do not make illegitimate use of royal symbols.

“It is such unusual times that it is a matter of waiting and seeing how things develop,” he said.

The Telegraph’s royal editor Camilla Tominey also said she thinks the couple may be asked to rebrand by Kensington Palace who may be averse to idea of Harry and Meghan keeping Royal in their name.

“It remains to be seen whether they’ll be able to keep that royal aspect because for all intents and purposes, they are not carrying out any engagements on behalf of the Queen or their military appointments,” she told ITV’s This Morning program on Monday.

“They are keeping their private patronages and their charitable work to themselves as they go off and have this new life in North America.”

After a week of intense negotiations with the Queen, Prince William and Prince Charles, Harry was spotted travelling home to be reunited with his wife, Duchess Meghan and their 8-month-old son Archie.

They are expected to spend most of their time in North America.
